Fontana WI Village Board Approves 1-year moratorium on Special Hunting
For the Safety of Residents and the desire for a better way, the Village Board is putting restrictions on the special hunting season
Since 2003, when a deer killed in the village of Fontana WI
tested positive for CWD (chronic wasting disease), the Wisconsin Department of
Natural Resources set a special CWD eradication hunt on specific hunting
grounds; this was set in place with the hope to keep the deer population down. Only about three deer have tested positive for
CWD since then, but the need to keep the deer herd within acceptably social and
biological numbers for the area is still a factor for Fontana.
However, the Fontana village board believes that there may
be other ways of dealing with this problem. Thus, the Village Board had a vote earlier this month approving a
one-year moratorium on the special hunting season within the village
limits. However, the Wisconsin
Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is requesting that the Village Board
reconsider their restrictions. The Village
cited concerns such as where the hunting was taking place and the possible safety
issues of residents and their families. The
DNR had not presented any statistics on the effectiveness of the hunting season
for the village board to consider before voting on the moratorium; thus it is
possible that the board may still reconsider given the right circumstances.
