Walworth County Forms an Intergovernmental Cooperation Council to Assuage Annexation Disputes
Due to a State law that allows cities and villages to annex land from neighboring downs, it was neccessary to form a council to discuss border agreements
To alleviate potential
annexation problems, Walworth County formed an Intergovernmental Cooperation
Council with an open invitation for all communities in the county to join;
while community members are always free to attend these meetings, they cannot
have voting power unless their respective community adopts an agreement. Bloomfield recently adopted the agreement
with hopes that the council can help the villages and towns relate to one
another.
Why the need for an Intergovernmental Cooperation
Council? The reason seems to stem from a
state law which allows cities and villages to annex land from neighboring towns
at a property owner’s request, which has created obvious problems in the recent
past. What the towns in the Council are
attempting to do currently to assuage annexation disputes is to establish
border agreements.
Other towns involved in the Intergovernmental Cooperation
Council include the town of Geneva, Linn, and the city of Lake Geneva, among other
area municipalities. For more
