Williams Bay Wisconsin may implement fertilizer ban
In Williams Bay Wisconsin the safety of the environment and residents is first priority. That’s why the village has been seriously considering the ban of fertilizers to be sold or used that contain phosphorus. Neighboring towns including Delavan and Lake Geneva already have laws in place that prevent the use of such fertilizers on lawns and Williams Bay is following suit.
The dangers in phosphorus include affecting algae and weed growth in the surrounding Lakes; this pollutant is detrimental to the lake’s nutrition, causing undesirable conditions in the lake’s ecosystem due to the over-production of aquatic plant life. Phosphorus will not dissolve easily in water and ends up in the lakes and streams due to run off from residents’ and farmers’ lawns and fields.
At June’s Board meeting, Building, Zoning and Ordinance Committee Chairman John Grove requested that Williams Bay Wisconsin adopt the same ordinance in this matter as surrounding towns; the next board meeting will reveal if it will take place in the near future.

[...] Williams Bay Wisconsin’s Village Board recently approved a phosphorus ban in the village effective October 1st of this year. The ban includes all phosphorus fertilizers for lawns and gardens to help reduce the negative effects to the local Lakes which include excessive plant growth in the Lake, throwing off the natural ecosystem. The Geneva Lake Environmental Agency is hoping to see Linn Township and Fontana Wisconsin also adopt this ordinance as well to ensure that the amount of runoff from phosphorus into the lakes is limited.
