Lake Geneva Wisconsin Road Extension Project Moves Ahead

the extension of Edwards Boulevard to Sheridan Springs Road plans are underway

Engineering firm Crispell-Snyder will now go ahead and prepare plans for the approved extension of Edwards Boulevard to Sheridan Springs Road in Lake Geneva Wisconsin. According to City Administrator Dennis Jordan’s numbers, the project which will include the road construction, concrete bridge, and the other expenses associated with the work will be approximately 2.9 million. At an April meeting, the City Council approved a traffic impact study that will provide information to Crispell-Snyder regarding the road connection and geotechnical services that would relate to the project; the city will offer $74,000 to the engineering firm for these consulting services.

Williams Bay Wisconsin Looks to a Future Water Plant

With inevitable updates needed, Williams Bay WI are looking ahead at new technology and a new water plant
Williams Bay Wisconsin needs to prepare for the future, by setting their sights on a new water plant for the village.  Village Engineer, Doug Snyder, began thoughts in this direction when he brought up the topic during an April Committee of the Whole meeting.  His first move, as approved by the Village board, is to conduct a water study for Williams Bay; the study will determine how well the current water plant is doing and what will be needed in the future.

Although there have not been any problems with the existing water plant, Snyder wants Williams Bay to be prepared to build a new plant with new technology in the future before the old one is damaged or stops working properly; the village will also need to work the new plant into a master plan and address some legal issues before it would be built and thus, planning in advance will help ease the process.

Fontana Wisconsin Lakefront Property Owners Disapprove Proposed Ordinance Changes

Lakefront Property owners were not happy with what the proposed zoning ordinance for their property

Concerns began for lakefront property owners last year when the idea of placing a second layer of homes by the lakefront was proposed. Since then the Fontana Wisconsin Village Board has appointed their staff to come up with a separate zoning ordinance for lakefront properties. However, the suggested changes, when brought to the public eye last week, were not favorable to lakefront property owners. The restrictions on caretaker homes and a new definition of how lot areas were to be measured did not seem to be in favor with those at the public hearing.

Due to the property owners’ reactions at Fontana’s Village Board meeting, the village’s staff will be looking over the changes again to see if they can come up with something more agreeable to those with primary interests.

Two Local Lake Geneva Businesses Awarded Liquor License

With Class B liquor licenses, two of Lake Geneva's local restaurants will be increasing their business

The two available liquor licenses for Lake Geneva Wisconsin were recently awarded to local businesses this past week. The City Council met to make the decision and reviewed the requests carefully, finally deciding to offer the Class B liquor licenses to the Golden Oaks Mansion and the Medusa Grill and Bistro restaurant.

These two licenses became available again due to the Hillmoor’s license being revoked and Applebee’s license unable to be used due to their current inability to come to agreement on property related issues. These available liquor licenses were highly coveted by Lake Geneva’s local food service businesses and five applied for them, with only two coming out victorious.

One of the license winners, the Golden Oaks Mansion is a bed and breakfast and the owner Waspi Bell has been yearning for the opportunity to offer a restaurant with refined tastes; the other restaurant winner, Greg Anagnos, hopes to serve cocktails in a lounge area of his restaurant, which will allow the grill to be open longer and increase business for the winter.

The number of Class B liquor licenses offered for each municipality is based on population, but Lake Geneva Wisconsin is looking to add more when the population estimates are altered.

Geneva WI Educates Property Owners and Visitors on How to Go Green

Geneva WI plans on having an Earth Day celebration every year to promote awareness on 'green' living

With the need to “go green” increasing in all parts of the country, Geneva Wisconsin is no exception. In celebration of Earth Day on April 26th the Town Park Commission provided a fun way for adults and children to learn about how they can help care for the environment. Among the activities were educational booths, children’s activities, a country market, a variety show, and a lake cleanup. The Geneva Lake Conservancy also spoke about how property owners can receive tax breaks by “going green” in a number of ways.

Geneva Wisconsin is hoping to celebrate Earth Day in the same manner each year in order the increase awareness of the need to care for the environment which includes the beautiful Lakes that make this area of Wisconsin so attractive.

Geneva Lake Conservancy Post New Watershed Signs

The Conservancy hopes to raise awareness of protecting Geneva Lake's Watershed with these new signs

The Geneva Lake Conservancy is taking measures for residents and visitors alike to take notice of the location of the watershed. Last Friday, Geneva Lake Conservancy officials joined with Lake Geneva and Linn township to reveal the first watershed signs installed in these communities. The signs are two-sided and they will be in 40 locations around the lake, focusing on roadways and entrances. Although the precise location of the watershed is difficult to determine, these signs will give a good idea where concern should be placed.

The watershed signs are the second phase of the Conservancy’s watershed education program designed to make everyone who lives or visits aware of the importance of protecting the beautiful Geneva Lake. Making children and adults aware that anything put into the ground around the watershed designated by the new signs will affect the quality of the lake and thus their well-being is the Conservancy’s main priority.  This should be an issue of concern for everyone as the quality of the lake will ultimately affect the environment, health, the economics of the local businesses, and property values.

Mirbeau-Hummel Have Hopes to Continue

Mirbeau-Hummel filed a notice of injury with the city in hopes of opening a dialogue that will further their 882-unit development plans

Although city voters recently denied a nonbinding referendum concerning the Mirbeau-Hummel development plan of 882-units, it isn’t over. Mirbeau filed a notice of injury with the city in hopes of talking out the present concerns the City Council may have and find a solution. If the City Council will review this notice and resolve the current problems than Mirbeau-Hummel may not go to the next level of filing a claim of damages. Mirbeau-Hummel representative John Terrell indicated to Lake Geneva Regional news that the whole issue is about zoning and they have every intention of moving forward with their commercial and residential development plans once these issues are resolved satisfactorily.

For more information on what the notice of injury entails visit Lakegenevanews.net.

Geneva Lake Environmental Agency to Keep Public Posted on Water Safety Throughout the Summer

It isn't new for the Environmental Agency to regular test lake water, but they will now be required to post a sign publically on a weekly basis indicating current safety levels

Although the Geneva Lake Environmental Agency has been testing Lake water for safety for years, they will begin placing signs at the entrance to the municipal beaches this summer, as reviewed by the Fontana Village Board at last Monday’s meeting. The signs will post the current level of bacteria in the lake and be color coded; a green sign would indicate the water is safe, a yellow one denotes a higher than normal level of bacteria, and a red sign would warn visitors that the beach is closed due to the bacteria level being very high. This system has arisen due to a new state law that requires that bacteria levels in Lake water should be publically posted.

To keep the data current on a weekly basis throughout the summer, the Lake water will be tested early on Mondays, starting the week before Memorial Day and ending the week after Labor Day; if the results seem higher than normal they will continue to test water every 24 hours until normalcy exists again so as not to keep the beaches closed longer than necessary.

Mirbeau-Hummel Referendum Rejected by Voters

The controversial Mirbeau-Hummel plan does not meet well with the community

In December the City Council voted unanimously for putting a referendum question concerning Mirbeau-Hummel on the April 1st ballot. The April Spring Election for Lake Geneva revealed a strong rejection of the Mirbeau-Hummel development referendum with voting numbers of 1,377-414; this was not surprising to many as the development plans have been the source of debate for officials and community members for the past year. The Lake Geneva Plan Commission voted in favor of the rezone and general development plan for the property in question, but they also wanted more input from residents on the issue. The split in opinions is mainly due to concerns about the natural environment of the area, with advocates insisting that it can only be beneficial economically and it is already zoned for more than the proposed residential units.

Walworth County High School Seniors Help Raise Money for Lake Como's Restoration project

The restoration of Lake Como is a cause the community supports

It seems that the whole community is invested in the restoration efforts of Lake Como, as evidenced by a recent fundraiser given by some local high school seniors. A Badger High School senior Rory Letteney took the lead in organizing and executing a fundraising dinner as a senior project to help with Lake Como’s restoration efforts. The dinner raised about $1,000, which is more than Letteney expected, and reflected the community’s desire to help with the cause.

The restoration of Lake Como begun this year with a small 645 feet of shore to begin with and it is expected to cost $61,000 to complete in full; nevertheless, the fundraising efforts of the community will help drive the project forward.

Walworth County’s Telephone Notification System Fast and Effective

In case of emergency situations, Walworth County is prepared

Walworth County Emergency Management has been effectively implementing the CodeRED system this year to notify people of emergency situations as they happen. The high-speed telephone notification system known as CodeRED allows the county to run effectively even in cases of emergency.  In January, when a car accident involving a utility pole caused those in Delavan Township to be without heat for more than six hours, the CodeRED system let residents know about the power outage and where shelter was available for them until repairs could be made.

The phone system allows the county to send message to homes, businesses and mobile phones at a rate of up to 60,000 calls an hour to any specific geographic area; the CodeRED system will also let officials know who did or did not receive the messages sent (e.g. they only left an answering machine message or someone actually picked up). It can also be used for missing persons and other emergency situations that affect the county or a certain area within the county.
