Walworth and Fontana WI Villages May Merge Emergency Services

The sharing of services should result in full-time firefighters

According to a recent article in Lake Geneva Regional news
online
, Walworth and Fontana WI may be sharing more emergency services in the
future. The villages already share building
inspectors and water waste management services, but now they are looking at a
fire protection district. Because of the
current decline in volunteer firemen it is expected that in 5 to 10 years the
villages may not have volunteer fire departments, they need to look into a
full-time staffing of the fire department. By combining services, the two villages will be able to save on
equipment and other expenses.

Currently the two departments work together with what is
known as a “Mutual Aid Box Alarm System”; this system notifies both departments
when certain calls come in. But with the
decline of volunteer firefighters, there will be the need to have full-time
positions in the near future.

The next step for Fontana and Walworth is to hire a
consultant that will help guide the two villages through the procedures and
regulations of the state laws that control how mergers can take place.
