City Council votes for a Referendum Concerning the Mirbeau-Hummel Development Plans
Due to pressure from community members, the first reading of the rezoning ordinance will be next April
The Mirbeau-Hummel development plan and rezone request was
put to referendum, according to an unanimous approval by the Lake Geneva City
Council this past Monday. Even though
the last vote was in approval of rezoning requests, community concerns over the
plans were not assuaged; the uncertainty of the impact of this development is
still fresh in the minds of some council members and many community
members.
Alderman Larry Magee said that part of this request for the
referendum was because of the numerous phone calls he received from Linn
Township members, as reported in the Gazette Extra. However, this new vote for a referendum has
caused more controversy over the development plans, causing the City Attorney
Berwyn Braden to explain that there is no need for this referendum as the
public has already been given hours of open mike time to voice opinions before
the vote to rezone.
As an effect of the referendum, the rezoning ordinance’s
first reading will not be until April of next year and thus approval of the
development is postponed until then.
