New construction and developments are planned for 2008 in
Fontana Wisconsin. Although there are
still a few obstacles in the way, some major improvements are slated to begin
this year. 

The Mill House Pavilion project is expected to begin in
March and be completed in May; this project will include reconstructing the old
Montague-Douglass Mill House using some of the original beams and trolley
tracks to preserve its history and make it usable again. The Pavillion is located across the street
from Fontana Elementary school. 

Other project plans for 2008 include a pedestrian path
connecting Walworth and Fontana, the Porter Court Plaza project (which includes
a fountain, walking paths and a garden at Porter Court), and a new fence along
the municipal beach.

The rising price of corn, which has resulted in some ethanol
producers shutting down, has some worried about the planned Sharon Ethanol
plant in Wisconsin. But Jeff Knight,
director of Global Renewable, is still positive that this will not cause a
problem as corn-made ethanol still has a future. 

As reported in The Week Extra, Global Renewable’s plans to
build an ethanol plant in Sharon WI is still moving ahead and they are hoping
to obtain the remaining funds needed for construction very soon; their hope is
to start construction for the plant by this summer. Knight expects the demand for renewable fuel
sources to increase and when cellulosic ethanol becomes cost-effective, corn
ethanol plants will be able to convert to this method easily. Thus, Sharon’s ethanol plant will be able to
easily adapt to any new developments in this field when the time comes.

The Lower Density Development LLC has expressed interest in
purchasing the 710 acres of property owned by Robert Hummel of the
Mirbeau-Hummel development plan. Earlier
this month they sent a letter to Hummel with an offer of negotiation for the
property. However, their likelihood of
receiving an answer at this point seems slim, as Hummel is in the middle of the
debate on rezoning plans and the property is not for sale.

The Lower Density Development (LDD) is a coalition of local
landowners who have concerns about overdevelopment in the Lake Geneva WI area
that will impact the quiet beauty of the natural environment and cause traffic
congestion. With specific plans for the
710 acres which include these goals, LDD is hoping that Hummel will consider
their offer.

Recently, both Walworth and Fontana received a $152,721 grant
each from the Department of Natural Resources to make a pedestrian path along Highway
67, connecting the two villages. The
only problem with receiving these grants that were requested for is that
neither village has incorporated it into their budgets. But despite this, it may be able to be built
as early as next Spring if the two village can cooperate and work together
before then to get it done.

There are two possible developments for the way the path
should be built that was discussed earlier this year before the grants were
received between the two villages. The
two plans included a more expensive plan to construct a path on the other end
of the Highway 67 drainage ditch and include a retaining wall for safety, and a
less expensive plan that would extend the shoulder of the Highway and include a
bicycle lane. Thus, the two villages
will have to join forces soon to decide on which plan to construct.

For those that spend their vacation time at their Lake

biking and walking enthusiasts alike.

The 2008 year will bring new
requirements for contractors according to the Wisconsin Department of Commerce. Homebuilding contractors may be required to
take a 12-hour series of courses and apply for a qualifier credential before
obtaining a permit. The new rules are
being issued according to the state contractor education legislation that
passed in April of 2006.

If you are planning on having a home
built in Lake Geneva WI in the coming year, be aware of the new requirements
for permits which will go into effect January 1^st of 2008.  Because obtaining permits is one of the
duties of a professional homebuilding contractor, it is not recommended that
homeowners apply for permits themselves.

Recent information from the Wisconsin Department of Revenue
indicates that the Lake Geneva city’s tax rate for the 2008 budget will drop to
$5.28 per $1,000 of assessed value; property owners will be happy to hear that
the initially proposed amount of $5.40 was not the final amount decided on in
the budget. Although this is only one of
five taxing districts property owners will see on their bills, it is a small
relief to what it could have been. According
to a recent Lake Geneva Regional News online article, the drop in the proposed tax
rate is due to assessed valuation increasing rather than a decrease in
spending.
